Ketto’s collection showcases a broad range of hand-painted ceramic pendants, some with cute characters, and some with abstract motifs.
Ceramic jewellery? Now, that’s unusual. How do you make them?
Obviously, the first step is motif design by Julie or Katheryne, Julie’s new associate in jewellery.
For the next step, you cannot avoid getting your hands dirty. The process of making pendants involves working with clay. You knead the clay, then you make patties out of which the pendants are cut out and burnished with a damp sponge.
The first firing produces a “biscuit,” a needed step. A basic colour is applied with glazes for each pendant. Each and every one of the pendants is then adorned elaborately. This requires many different steps, because each applied colour needs to dry before the next one is applied. It takes some time, but it’s all worth it.
For the finishing touch, a transparent glaze is applied to protect the jewel and make it shine. The pendants are fired again in ceramic ovens. Finally, various beads are attached. The result is always an expressive, one-of-a-kind jewel.
